The trek is one of the short and most stunning treks in Nepal offering the beautiful stages of alpine freshwater lakes. The lakes are surrounded by beautiful hills, which elevates their beauty. The lake remains frozen for six months every year in winter (October –June). This trekking is usually done for cultural purposes however is not only limited to the culture there are also other elements that the trek offers. Overview
Situated in the Rasuwa District of Nepal Gosaikunda lies in the northern part of Kathmandu between Langtang valley, Helambu, and in Langtang National park. It covers a surface area of 34 acres and it is believed that there are 108 lakes within its vicinity. The lake melts to form a Trishuli river. The main Lakes are Bhiarab Kunda, Saraswati Kunda Surya Kunda, and Nag Kunda each having its own importance from a cultural perspective. Every year thousands of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims flock to the lake for salvation. It is believed that the holy dip in the sacred lake washes away all sins. The auspicious occasion of (Janaipurnima) and the Nepali New Year is the peak time when there are unimaginable crowds.
The trek is done at a slow pace and we will saunter in nature and get bewitched by nature’s beauty. The first few days are spent walking up through the forests before we reach the tree line at a higher level. With a mountain view in the background and the clouds beneath your feet, it feels too special to be embraced by nature. The way to the lake is also a very pleasant walk. The route is full of natural and cultural sites seeing, from pine forests with rhododendron trees to little villages of the Thami’s, Gurungs, Tamangs, and other minorities where life is still untouched by modern civilization. There is a possibility of sighting wildlife like Himalayan Ghoral, Blue sheep etc
The Gosaikunda Lake Trek can also be customized with the Langtang valley trek, which is also an exciting way of hiking. The way lies through lush green villages with wide-open paddy fields, cornfields, and apple orchards. Apart from the mountains, it has a lot to offer from nature’s perspective.
