Shey Phoksundo Lake is one of the most iconic and exotic tourist destinations in the Dolpo region. The lake is located at 3660m from sea level is an optical illusion that leaves you speechless. We will spend a day exploring the lake from a different viewpoint. Beneath the high hills, hides Shey Phoksundo Lake with the splendid backdrop of Kanajirowa Himal. Shey Phoksundo Lake is an alpine freshwater lake located in the Dolpa district of Karnali province. It is the deepest lake in Nepal having a depth of 136m. It is located in the heart of Shey Phoksundo National Park and is described as one of the world’s “Natural Hidden Wonders”.
Stunning Alpine peaks rise above crystalline water, and stiff cliffs bounce powerful echoes across the lake. The blue-colored pristine lake will definitely make you appreciate the beauty of nature and is beautiful enough to amuse you for a day. The lake is totally free of aquatic life, which the crystal waters clearly demonstrate. The rocks, forests, and snow-capped peaks add another element to the magnified beauty of the lake. Nothing beats the peaceful serenity of a calm lake, especially during those photo-worthy moments at sunrise and sunsets
Overview
Phoksundo lake trek is unlike another trek where you get the beauty of the trek here and there, it is all about the final destination. The lake is located in a remote location hence, be ready to wander where Wifi and network are weak and your heart, body soul is close to mother nature. The trek is relatively easy, as there are no high passes and easy trails. The Phoksundo River originated from the lake itself and is to be followed throughout the journey. The river is pristine and the gushing sound is a symphony to the ear. Soak in the relaxing scenery and enjoy nature during the trek. We hike past beautiful waterfalls, river valleys and lush green forests of pine and Juniper, apple orchards with an astounding view of Dhaulagiri Mountain. Remoteness is reflected in the journey as we see the mules carrying loads as a means of transportation.
Phoksundo lake trek takes you to the remote lower Dolpo region, one of the least visited regions of Nepal. The trek is a perfect blend of nature and culture. The notable features seen here are snowy peaks, ancient and remote villages, rich wildlife, and lovely Buddhist monasteries.
The traditional Tibetan culture prevails in the region and hence, we can already guess the importance of Gumba, Monasteries, and Prayer flags in the area. There is a monastery on the eastern side of Phoksundo Lake and more than 20 stupas in the southern belt of the lake. Annual prayers and worshipping is carried out every year on special occasions.
